Riverside and Hillside Park Construction Update

Riverside Park and the Susquehanna River

NEW LIGHTS AT RIVERSIDE PARK

Location: From Bridge Street headed South, turn left on 3rd Avenue.

In the summer of 2021, New Cumberland Borough entered into a lease with Norfolk Southern for the river access area at the end of 3rd Avenue. The Borough is committed to improving the recreational and safety attributes of this site for the benefit of the community. In July, new lights were installed at Riverside Park to increase safety and prevent unwanted and unruly conduct. Please remember all Borough Parks close at dusk.

Uses: Fish from the banks or launch your boat at the boat ramp. No jet skis. Be careful of river rocks that may cause damage to boats.

Hillside Park

DESIGN FOR FINISHED PARK

Over the last several weeks, you may have noticed construction vehicles, dirt being moved, and hard surfaces being resurfaced at Hillside Park, located on Hillside Elementary School. As reported in May on the Borough website this is all part of the project to remediate the old tennis courts at Hillside, and convert them into the following:

  • 2 regulation size basketball courts
  • 1 tennis court
  • 4 pickleball courts
  • A “green space” where visitors can sit & relax
  • Replacement of the fence surrounding the courts
  • The project will also remediate the drainage issue that causes erosion to the adjoining baseball field.
  • The project is proceeding in scope, on budget, and on-time with the expected completion date being the middle of August (weather permitting).

When completed, Hillside Park will provide a recreational amenity for a variety of recreational and leisure interests; and a place for people to gather in a safe and healthful setting in our wonderful town.

It should be noted that this project has been conducted by an all-volunteer staff.  It is not a New Cumberland Borough project, and it has used no local tax payer dollars to pay for the project.  The project has been designed in full cooperation and support with the West Shore School District, on whose property this project sits. The project is proceeding in scope, on budget, and on time with the expected completion date being the middle of August (weather permitting).

The pictures that follow will give you the:  before, during, and final (picture at top of this section) views of what the property has been and will be when done. Should anyone have any comments or questions, feel free to contact Don Kibler at dkibler4newcumb@gmail.com.
